The man's a psycho, wait till you meet his parents... These beautiful people never had a good relationship, and when the wife got pregnant, things got worse... Until the little baby was thrown in the trash. Luckily, he was found and brought to an orphanage. They named him Bernie. Now, Bernie's 30, and he decided that it was time for him to go his own way. So he gets an apartment and gets down with business. He desperately wants to find his parents. The story continues as Bernie meets his family, fights people he thinks are against him and gets involved with a girl on heroin.
This story could have been so depressive and melodramatic, but it's treated with humor and irony. The dialogues are raw, the characters have an attitude and the twists are unexpected. And, man! This film is so violent! It's one of the sickest, deeply violent and politically incorrect films I've ever seen. Bernie keeps on beating and killing people for a yes or a no, and his parents are even worse. But, call me a nut if you want, this is all outrageously funny. I really laughed my ass off! Director, co-writer and star Albert Dupontel doesn't take himself seriously. The violence is pushed to the extreme. It's all exaggerated. Speaking of Dupontel, he leads an highly interesting cast of French actors, unknown but talented. Most people are ugly in the film, but it goes with the genre. You don't expect to see Brad Pitt killing a dude with a shovel while his dad, portrayed by, say, Sean Connery, is banging an unconscious chick on a piano! Not that I wouldn't dig seeing that, but it's unlikely to happen.
BERNIE wouldn't have been made in Hollywood, like its more serious predecessor from Belgium, the excellent "C'est Arrivé Près de Chez Vous". Dupontel is great as Bernie, like I was saying. He's disturbing yet lovable, childish yet violent. The direction is awesome. Dupontel's camera is very dynamic. He multiplies visual trickery, inventive shots and camera movements. The music fits the action brilliantly. I really enjoyed the raunchy guitar riffs. BERNIE is a sick film that somehow is highly entertaining. If you have any problem with violence, keep your distances! But if you're ready for a wild ride, hang on and have a blast!
